The Eye Clinic.
The Eye Clinic. Jamaica has a prevalent problem of trachoma infections. These infections affect people’s eyesight and their treatment is not affordable for many low-income earners. Through partnership with a local church named Shiloh Ministry, various patients in need of surgical eye procedure were identified and surgery was administered to them.
The Masai Community Initiatives
Contact with the Masai Mara community was made in 2016. Through the local safari guide, this visit resulted into establishing contact with community initiatives that needed much assistance. Being in a remote location, the community health center lacked proper medications and the buildings were in a dilapidated state. The Emurutoto Health Center III facility was identified as one of the community interventions that needed assistance.
A partnership was struck with Africa Foundation, an American based foundation that carries out social impact projects around the communities where their mother company Above & Beyond own tourism facilities. This partnership resulted into construction of the existing health center unit and a doctors’ accommodation block which houses five doctors that now reside in the vicinity of the health center, thus being able to extend 24-hour medical attention to patients in this community.
In 2023, a maternity ward extension project was commissioned. This project is on-going and will solve an urgent problem of shortage of bed space for women who need maternity services in this community. Currently, women who come to the Health Center to give birth only have 6 hours until they are discharged so as to make bed space available for other incoming women. This is a critical problem towards maternal health and well-being.
