Mia’Sarka is a Greek word that symbolizes “One Flesh”. Registered in East Africa – Uganda, Mia’Sarka Foundation is a Canadian based organization that provides grassroot community outreach and support programs targeting education and health across Uganda, Kenya, and Jamaica.
Mia’sarka started informally on a family trip to Africa when Melvin Cohen and Carol Picart decided to visit Uganda in July, 2006. Being the first visit to Africa, there were some mixed expectations on the trips based on perceptions and limited information about what Africa truly is and it’s all about.
On arrival in Uganda, they were met with warmth and hospitality, starting with their then tour guide Andrew Ssentongo who met them at the airport and handled their transportation throughout their two weeks’ stay.
At the end of the trip, Carol Picart was struck by how genuinely warm and receptive the local people were, even when they didn’t have much to give. She felt compelled to establish a more meaningful connection with Africa beyond just being a tourist. This is how Mia’sarka all started.
